Agriculture Sector Working Group Meeting Held under ICAT Georgia Project

The Agriculture Sector Working Group meeting was held within the framework of the ICAT Georgia: Developing a Framework for NDC Tracking and GHG Projections in Priority Sectors project, bringing together representatives of relevant government institutions, sector experts, and other stakeholders to discuss key climate action priorities for Georgia’s agriculture sector.

The meeting forms part of the ongoing process to update Georgia’s 2035 Climate Change Strategy and develop the 2027–2029 Climate Action Plan, based on the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and UNOPS.

During the meeting, participants reviewed the activities included in the 2024–2025 Climate Action Plan, assessed their implementation status and progress, and discussed existing challenges and gaps. Particular attention was given to the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the agriculture sector and to additional climate actions that could be considered for inclusion in the new Action Plan.

Participants shared their practical experience and perspectives on the sector’s current needs, achievements, and challenges. The discussion focused on developing realistic, measurable, and implementable measures, defining responsible institutions, and identifying the data required to effectively monitor progress.

The Working Group meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen coordination among relevant stakeholders and ensure that the updated climate policy framework reflects the priorities and practical realities of Georgia’s agriculture sector.

The meeting was organised with the support of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), UNOPS, the UN Environment Programme Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC), and the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus).

The outcomes of the meeting will contribute to the further development of sectoral climate actions and to the preparation of Georgia’s updated Climate Change Strategy and 2027–2029 Climate Action Plan.
