This new initiative of REC Caucasus has been started after the adoption of the UNECE strategy  on Education for Sustainable Development at the High-level meeting of education and environment ministries held in Vilnius, Lithuania on  March 17-18, 2005. According to the Strategy the Regional Environmental Centres are expected to be among of its implementing organisations.

The Programme has been developed on the basis of recommendations made at the Fifth Annual International Conference of REC Caucasus “Towards the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development” held in Tbilisi, Georgia on November 1-2, 2005.

The aim of the Programme is to assist the countries of the South Caucasus in implementation of the UNECE Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development.
